Andy Young
Since the early 1990's, Andy Young has been entertaining audiences with his diverse talents as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist. A percussionist since childhood, the Hammered Dulcimer became Andy Young's instrument of choice at age 20. The rhythmic rudiments of the dulcimer made it a natural progression for Andy's expanding talents. Soon after, he immersed himself in the Celtic music of his Scottish and Irish heritage and since that time has become proficient on the Irish flute and tin whistle as well. Andy has also developed a repertoire in traditional music from Quebec.
Andy performs extensively at coffeehouses, pubs, festivals, concert venues, weddings, and banquets. He offers performances as a solo artist as well as with other musicians. Andy also plays flute for the Chicago-based Irish band, Donnybrook. In addition to performing, Andy loves teaching music to adults and children alike. Workshops and private lessons cover the basics of hammered dulcimer and tin whistle as well as special topics like "Adapting Irish Ornamentation to the Hammered Dulcimer", "Crooked Tunes from Quebec", and "County Clare-Style Hammered Dulcimer." He offers special educational programs for children that explore how music expresses emotion on both a personal and multicultural level.
Andy released his first CD entitled “Way Beyond a Thousand Summers” in 1995, which features traditional tunes from Ireland and Quebec, as well as his own original songs. The title comes from the song “Garden” which received acclaim for its reflection on hope amidst adversity. He has also recorded a CD with the singer/ songwriter collective, SOFA featuring more of his original material. His most recent recording is Donnybrook’s CD, “The Stool of Repentance” on which he contributes extensively with flute and singing. Andy has also composed and produced original music for the modern dance company, Sling.
Andy Young brings a fresh approach to both stage and educational environment, infusing humor and insight to provide a deep understanding of the role of music in our multicultural and interpersonal world.
